On January 29, 2017, a phone call changed the course of Ella Kate Leitner's future.
Ella Kate was born on March 4, 2016 with large tumors in the left ventricle of her heart and her parents, Melanie and Mike, were then told to prepare themselves for their baby girl to not survive through the weekend.
After beating the odds for eight months, the team of doctors at Levine Children's Hospital decided Ella Kate's only chance of survival was a heart transplant. In November 2016, Ella Kate was placed on the transplant list and on Sunday, January 29th, the Leitner family received the phone call that a heart was available. In the following hours, doctors successfully completed Ella Kate's transplant, the first at Levine's with a mismatched blood type.
Today, Ella Kate is thriving with her new heart and enjoying the days as a 21-month-old.
One year to the date of that life-changing phone call, on January 29, 2018, the Women's Auxiliary of Motorsports will host a fundraiser for Ella Kate's current and future medical needs, while also raising awareness for organ donation. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the medical expenses for Ella Kate and help assist with the financial burden of medications and future needs.
In addition to celebrating Ella Kate, organ donation will be a key focus of the evening, as this story would have a much different ending if it wasn't for the selflessness of another family making the decision for their loss to be another family's blessing.
